More than ever I am aware
and convinced of how much the activities undertaken by both
Reach Out and Bengt can help everyone to become more conscious
of what is really happening in our world: of what we and others
are experiencing, beyond boundaries, everyday, at every moment,
in every minute.
-
It is now more than ever
necessary that we leave our "reality" to seek that
of others, in our school environment - which I will openly acknowledge
as "privileged," in which we develop our awareness,
in which we operate everyday.
-
"Reach Out" and
"Bengt" have tried this year, with their activities,
with their great solidarity and their democracy to come to the
assistance of disadvantage people. They have tried to understand
tragic events, and to reflect on them. Other than material aid
provided to those born "under another sky," the students
have made it possible for the Saint Stephens community to understand
together - granted, with certain contentions, with some conflicts,
in a year that was "special" for its tragic international
events - what democracy is, where it begins, how it can be born
and how it can always come about in our International "microcosm"
to make it bloom in the future in a world where barriers of
intolerance exist.

I can not say enough of what
has been done by Reach Out for Brazil and the "Casa Luciana,"
for the young earthquake victims of Molise and, more recently,
for an orphanage in Armenia.
I can not say enough for what Bengt has done for the Palestinian
children in the Aida refugee camp and for victims of the war
in Iraq…
I can not say enough, because I would certainly forget many
things.

But what I would like to
say most of all, that more important than the financial aid
sent to all these people, it is the spirit with which these
aids were earned which should be remembered first and foremost,
which should be praised and rewarded with nothing other than
a big "thankyou" to who has organized, to who has
helped, to who has participated and given his cooperation: the
students, parents, teachers and also organizations such as FAO
who have offered their contribution spontaneously, showing that
St. Stephen's - our "microcosm" of solidarity - has
no limits and is now able to branch outside the school.

I would also like to thank
this year's members of Bengt and Reach Out, who have cooperated
and worked together, showing that through both a "monetary"
solidarity and a solidarity that is perhaps more "moral"
on an educational level, there was a small lesson to keep in
mind: the understanding of others, the acceptance of others,
humanitarian aid are all achieved through an awareness of global
problems.

Between Reach Out and Bengt
there is actually a marginal difference: we become informed
so we can help, and in the process help each other grow through
the lessons that experience has taught each one of us.

The "Bengt Board"
played an eminent role in our school, and was active throughout
the year. It has allowed "questions" and "answers,"
and information from every "point of view". The forum
on the so-called "anti-americanism" in a period of
high tension within our school community has allowed many to
reflect, to accept different points of views and to "calm
some agitated minds." Each one of us, projects outside
of himself his thoughts, each one of us can express that which
his own conscience dictates. What counts is that there is a
meeting point for everyone and that the sense of democracy that
comes out of a small international environment can become a
great, democratic spirit in the future.

Is this presumptuous?
Perhaps.

But from the "little,"
the "big" can be born.

- REACH OUT’S FUNDRAISING CONCERT FOR
THE JOWHAR HOSPITAL IN SOMALIA

| The Hospital of Jowhar
is one of the few public health centers in southern Somalia.
However, it lacks almost all basic equipment and supplies, from
disposable items like soap and toilet paper to medical equipment
like stethoscopes.
The fundraising concert was held on March 31 in the auditorium
of the school. Performances included Choir music, piano solos
and duets, our famous rock star teacher, Mr. Masoni and his
band, and many more!!! All money from Reach Out’s Fundraising
Concert was directly donated to the Hospital. |

LATIN - AMERICAN
DINNER - "LET THEM

Che la serata ci avrebbe
portato in Messico lo speravamo, ma non ci credevamo.
Da settembre il chiapas era entrato nella nostra mente grazie
all'intervento di Maria cardenas (classe 2002) venuta a presentare
la sua esperienza di volontariato in una comunità del
Chiapas per sei mesi l'anno scorso.

Bengt aveva invitato Maria a parlarci del suo lavoro, delle sue emozioni,
di quello che ha portato in sé da quella meravigliosa esperienza.
Jaime Nieman aveva allora introdotto il Chiapas "politico e storico"
prima che Maria ci comunicasse le sue impressioni piene di emozioni
e di verità.
Bengt aveva raggiunto il suo obiettivo. I ragazzi di Reach Out insieme
a quelli di Bengt hanno allora pensato di passare dalla conoscenza
di un popolo, dalla consapevolezza del suo "essere" e delle
difficoltà di vita in quell' angolo del centro America, all'organizzazione
di una grande opera di solidarietà per questi bambini del Chiapas
dai visi meravigliosi, dagli occhi espressivi avidi di domande e di
vita. L'hanno chiamato "Let them go to school".

E' iniziata una grande sfida
perché il tempo era poco fino al sette novembre e il lavoro
"pazzesco". Insieme, con la collaborazione di tutti, chi
più chi meno, siamo riusciti a fare di quella serata una grande
"vittoria" di Reach Out e Bengt uniti per la prima volta
per una stessa causa. La serata latino americana di cui Anita Guerra
ha curato la parte "culinaria" insieme alle famiglie latino
americane della scuola e a tante altre di tutti i continenti si presentava
inizialmente come una cena. Un gruppo folcloristico messicano, grazie
a Clara Arios Padrò, ci ha poi gentilmente proposto la sua
collaborazione, a favore dei bimbi del Chiapas.
Il gruppo di danze popolari messicane, "Los rancheros" diretto
da Susanna Moraledo, ha offerto uno spettacolo di alta qualità
ai bambini del Chiapas e a tutti noi.
La magia del Messico è entrata nel "chapel" della
nostra scuola, con i suoi balli, la sua musica, le sue canzoni, la
sua chitarra e i suoi colori. La sala era stracolma. I più
giovani si erano sistemati sui gradini del teatro. Aspettavamo cinquanta
persone, ne sono venute duecento. La festa è stata grande,
allegra e colma di emozioni quando la mamma di Maria Cardenas ha ringraziato
tutti per quello che era stato fatto per il suo paese, per fare conoscere
anche con il cibo e il folclore quella regione del Messico, troppo
spesso ignorata. Ha ringraziato, molto emozionata, anche a nome dei
bambini del Chiapas.

Dalle sette a mezza notte, la
Saint Stephens, il 7 novembre ha vissuto con i sapori della cucina
messicana e latino americana, con la musica e i colori del Messico,
un viaggio di solidarietà in un paese meraviglioso.

Ringrazio particolarmente Anita
Guerra senza laquale i 200 "vassoi" non sarebbero stati
pronti per saziare chi era venuto anche per assaggiare la cucina di
un altro continente. Ringrazio anche a nome di Anita i ragazzi della
scuola che hanno lavorato insieme a lei, dietro alle quinte per fare
del teatro un "ristorante" messicano. Grazie a Phil Allen,
Preside della Saint Stephens che ci ha messo a disposizione l'auditorium
che abbiamo inaugurato con la prima cena. Grazie a Trevor Pilling
e a Richard Trythal per la loro musica al piano per più di
due ore. Grazie a Jaime Nieman per il suo "spagnolo". Un
grazie particolare a tutte le famiglie che hanno collaborato per fare
della cena una cena latino americana, a Hélène Gilles
che ha preparato 200 "crèmes caramel" dessert del
Messico. Grazie al signore Seghal e al Signore D'amico per le loro
donazioni. Grazie a tutti quelli che da venerdì mattina stavano
nelle loro cucine per preparare quello che avrebbe fatto della cena
una vera cena latino americana. Grazie a tutti quelli che sono venuti
e hanno collaborato a quella serata di solidarietà. Grazie
a tutti i ragazzi di Reach Out e di Bengt.

E non sarà sufficiente
dire "grazie" a Dilhani, a Clara, a Addie e a Charles per
il lavoro che hanno svolto insieme a me per un mese anche di sabato
per vincere la sfida.
Devo dire a tutt'e quattro con molta sincerità e con molta
emozione che senza di loro, senza le loro anzietà......., senza
il loro entusiasmo, senza la loro volontà e la loro convinzione
di dare all'altro, non ce l'avrei fatta. Il volontariato è
fatto di gioie e di paure. E' fatto di collaborazione, di comunione
di interessi e di idee. Il volontariato è altruismo. Il volontariato
è desiderio di dare senza pensare e senza riflettere. Il volontariato
nasce dal cuore. Bravi ragazzi: ce l'avete fatta.

I bimbi del Chiapas, un giorno
forse sapranno che li abbiamo aiutati dalla nostra piccola comunità
internazionale. E se non lo sapranno, non fa niente. Sappiamo noi,
che con i nostri 2220 euros potranno comprare quello che darà
alla loro vita nella scuola un lume di speranza.

On Friday, St. Stephens held a special
Latin American dinner. The event was organized by Reach Out & Bengt
as a fund raiser for the children of Chiapas, a southern state in Mexico.
Chiapas is one of the poorest regions in Mexico, and was brought to the
foreground by an alumnus of St. Stephens, Maria Cardenas, whom worked
there as a volunteer for about a year.
The night was truly spectacular. A wide array of Latin American food was
served ranging from Mexican classics like 'arroz y frijoles' and 'pollo
con mole' to Cuban cuisine offering 'empanadas' and 'platanos maduros'.
In addition to the wonderful food (all cooked by parents and friends of
the community of St. Stephens), there was also a live show to add to the
ambiance. There was a Mexican couple singing 'canciones tradicionales'
and an incredible array of dancers which displayed the 'danzas y bailes
folkloricos mexicanos,' all in traditional Mexican dress.
