St. Stephen’s Mathematics Students Bring Home Awards

The weekend of March 4 – 7 St. Stephen’s School participated in the Senior Math Competition held at the Rabat American School in Morocco. St. Stephen’s students were graciously hosted by local families and thus were able to fully appreciate the beauty and charm of this city. The host school also organized tours of Rabat, including an interesting morning in the Medina with shopping and mint tea. The host school made sure that the 3-day math competition was a good combination of work and relaxation.
Four St. Stephen’s students from the I.B. Higher Level mathematics class participated in the competition. Jina H. (grade 12) placed 7th and her brother, Joon H. (grade 10) placed 9th out of the 81 participants. The St. Stephen’s team, Jina H., David P. and Dale W., placed second (out of 26) in the team competition! Each student on the top three teams received an elegant fossiled stone plate as a trophy. I am very proud of the performance of our students and would like, again, to congratulate Jina, David, Dale and Joon. Well done!
This annual mathematics competition is sponsored by the ISMTF (The International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation), an organization of math teachers from some of Europe’s most prestigious international schools. St. Stephen’s mathematics department is a
charter member of the organization and has participated in four ISMTF Senior Competitions.
We plan on participating in next year’s competition which will be held in the Netherlands. St. Stephen’s should also consider the possibility of one day hosting the math competition in Rome. Needless to say, Rome would be a very popular venue for the competition.
A big thanks to Angela Raymond who organized a fantastic trip to Morocco during trip week so that my students (and I) could enjoy trip week and also participate in the competition in Rabat. It was a memorable week!
