DOWN SYNDROME THEATRE GROUP

Laboratorio Integrato TEATROVIAMOCI - St. Stephen's School

by "Le Bollicine" (Italian Association of Persons with Down Syndrome)
with the participation and assistance of St. Stephen's Students and Faculty

Rephrasing "Il Fantasma del Palco Scenico" to "Il Fantasma del Palco Igienico"

Although maybe not one of the school's most popular groups, Down Syndrome Theatre Group still thrives in its small and active community of actors! This year, our group is made up of 3 seniors (Chiara, Andrea, Tommaso), 2 juniors (Bhavana, Yumiko), and 2 freshmen (Giorgia, Costanza), 4 of our old friends (Sirio, Luca, Federico, Gabriele), Tiziana and (ex-bio teacher) Mr. Locilento! We are not an environmental group, we are a company of artists! With an interesting twist! We prepare a show for the end of the year, but our goal is not really to entertain the public with a perfect and aesthetically pleasing show, but it is rather to enable our friends to enjoy at least one afternoon a week in our company. In fact, as the name of our group says, we do activities with people who have Down's Syndrome, which I am sure is a disease you have all heard about. We are delighted to be able to participate in these activities, because we know that we are offering our friends an afternoon of fun an entertainment which few other groups can offer. All the members of this group have a keen interest in helping other people help themselves, and, as leader who always keeps an eye on everything, I can say that they greatly enjoy the time we spend together.
It is possible that you haven't heard from us throughout the year and perhaps you don't know that much about us, but that is because we have been busy meeting every Wednesday from 3,45 to 5,30 to prepare our show, to play with our friends, and most importantly to have FUN! But now, we are proud to present to you our show: a parody on "The Phantom of the Opera". Throughout the year, we have worked hard on preparing our play (especially memorizing our scripts and trying to find suitable costumes), and now we wish to share the product of our hard work with you!
Our show, "Il Fantasma del Palco Igienico", will be held Sunday the 25th of April at the Ippodromo delle Capannelle. For more information, keep your eye out from posters which will be posted around the school!
Down Syndrome Theatre Group is a group which was born many years ago and has seen the participation of many faculty members and many students, and it will continue to exist as long as it can! The group needs active, interested, willing members who will bring spirit and hard work into the company, just like the ones who are participating now! If you want more information on what we do and what it feels like to be in Down Syndrome Theatre Group, ask one of the members (see our board right in front of the chapel's main entrance!)

Chiara Caiusi
Leader of the 2009-2010 Down Syndrome Theatre Group

One of the activities which has made an impact on the life and work in the school community the past nine years is the Down Syndrom Theatre Group.

The activity is directed by "Il Teatro delle Bollicine" (A.I.D.P. Associazione Italiana Persone Down) which tries as an objective to stimulate creative and spontaneous expressions in Down Persons. In the recent years, the group has presented the following performances:

L'Uovo di Colomba

Il Piccolo Principe

Peter oh Peter (Peter Pan)

Neapolitan comedy featuring Arlecchino and Pulcinella as the main characters

Mille Luci a musical production which was performed on June 2001.

St. Stephen's students and faculty have contributed to the activity as a support group helping to write scripts, participating as actors in the performances and working behind the scenes.

For our students their involvement has been more than just a theatrical experience but rather has given them the possibility to encounter an aspect of life which is very different from their own and understand that there are no boundaries between what is considered to be "normal" and "not normal" in our world.

The development of fundamental values such as solidarity and friendships between our students and those of "Il Teatro delle Bollicine" have become more intense each year working together as actors in theatrical productions and participating in other activities.
