Welcome to the Boarding
of St. Stephen's
|
-
-
| The
Boarding Department at St. Stephen's can accommodate approximately
40 students living in double rooms, with occasional triples
or singles, depending on availability, all with Internet
and network access. In a close community atmosphere, resident
faculty supervisors provide social and academic support
to boarding students. Boarders are housed in the school
building, boys on the top floor and girls on the second.
Every attempt is made to create a family atmosphere for
the boarders as well as to provide social opportunities.
The snack bar and lounge with TV and DVD/VCR are popular
spots. Meals are taken in the dining hall, and the food
is mainly based on Italian cousine.
Rome and its surroundings provide many opportunities for
week-end activities: visits of historical and cultural
sites, ice skating, day trips to nearby beaches and ski
areas, hiking in the Abruzzi. Boarders are often invited
to spend a night or a weekend with a day student's family. |

The servers allow Internet access using ADSL
connection (4Mb download speed)
Connection is available from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 at night
Access is filtered via Proxy Server
Networked B/W laser printers are also available in the school's
library. Students might use the network to transfer and print
their files. |
|
The school's computer network allows access to
the internet/email and shared resources in all the boarding
rooms using a PC (Windows 95/NT/98/2000/ME/XP) or a
Mac (Mac OS 8, 9 and
X). The network reaches also the resident faculty apartments,
all the classrooms and labs, the library, the student lounge
and the bar. The administrative area is on a separate network.
- To connect to the servers a network card of one of
the following types is required:
-
- Ethernet RJ45 10BaseT or
similar
- Ethernet RJ45 100BaseT or
similar
-
-
Please note that most laptops have
the network card already installed (also called Ethernet
or LAN, it is a port with 8 pins, not to be confused
with the port of the modem which has only 4 or 6 pins
and it is for the regular phone line which cannot be
used at St. Stephen's). The school DOES NOT provide
this card, therefore it should be purchased and installed
prior arriving to school. It could be purchased in any
computer store and the cost is around 25 Euros. On site
technical assistance is provided for installation and
setup.
-
-
The wireless
network reaches all rooms in the dorms. In
addition, most of the areas in the school are reached
by the wireless signal; therefore, students are free
to move on campus with their laptops and still be able
to access the internet and school intranet.

A variety of outings and
weekend trips enrich the boarding life routine. On any weekend,
students may be found on the beach in Amalfi, Ventotene
or Sperlonga, at the Villa Borghese, touring Pompeii, wondering
the Uffizi in Florence, hiking on the hills of Montalcino
in Tuscany or in the Piazza del Campo in Siena. In addition
to chaperoned trips, students often travel independently
to easily accessible sites and towns.

her in the morning if they feel ill.
In the event of a medical emergency, students
are taken to the nearest Pronto Soccorso (emergency room) at
the Fatebenefratelli or S. Giovanni hospital near the school.
If a doctor needs to be consulted in a non emergency
situation, the school doctor is on call 24 hours. The school
will also arrange for boarding students necessary medical treatments,
like visits to orthodontists, eye tests, specialists, etc. We
